Sharon's story: Ironman 70.3 Hawai'i

BaseCamp alum Sharon Keith shared her experience at the 2023 Ironman 70.3 Hawai'i.

I'm overjoyed to report a small miracle: I made the podium (2nd place) at the Hawaii 70.3 Ironman and earned a spot to the Half Ironman World Championship in Finland. Why is this a miracle? The most running I did to prepare were a few "test runs" to see how my injured achilles tendon would hold up. I didn't do the normal running required and was going to grab a coffee after the bike (okay, so quitting is not in my DNA, but I gave myself permission to quit if I needed to).

Here are a few things I learned:

  1. To make it to the second transition off the bike and on to the run with enough stamina to continue, you have to have done extra work somewhere, and the bike was a good choice to put in extra time

  2. Running in water or the ocean will not stress your quads enough to avoid being sore after running up and down hills (ha ha).

  3. When Tim says on the last day of the Mallorca training camp that we are ending camp with climbing climbing climbing and riding 85 miles "to build a bigger engine"...I now completely understand (actually, the last day riding with Andrea and Coach Jim was my best and favorite day of the camp).

Thanks Tim, Namrita, Menachem, and all my cycling buddies for teaching me so much!!!
