The Basics of Training with Data

BaseCamp is excited to announce a free online course, Training with Data: The Basics, designed to help athletes of all levels understand how to effectively use data to improve their performance. In this beginner-friendly course, you'll learn the fundamentals of training with power, TSS, and more as we discuss key concepts like setting training zones, analyzing your performance, and building smarter training plans.

Whether you're new to data-driven training or looking to refresh your skills, this course is the perfect starting point. Don't miss this opportunity to train smarter, not harder!

Training with Data: The Basics

In today's world of advanced metrics and technology, understanding and using data is key to unlocking our full potential as cyclists. Whether you're a competitive athlete aiming to optimize performance or a recreational rider looking to ride smarter and stronger, this course will empower you with the tools to train effectively.

In this article and video series, you'll learn how to harness the power of metrics like watts, power, and normalized power and dive into advanced concepts like Training Stress Score (TSS), Intensity Factor (IF), and the Performance Management Chart (PMC). Through practical lessons and real-world examples, you'll develop the skills to analyze your rides, track your training, and achieve your goals with confidence.

Lesson 1: Watts, Power, and Normalized Power

In this lesson we dive into the basic building block units of all training with data: watts and power. The physiological concept of normalized power is explained, and we discuss why it is used as the basis of most tracking metrics.

Lesson 2: Workout Impact

In this lesson we discuss the concepts of quantifying and scoring workout impact, considering both intensity and duration. Intensity Factor (IF) and Training Stress Score (TSS) are explained with simple examples.

Lesson 3: Understanding Performance Management

Utilizing lessons learned in 1 and 2, let's break down the concept of training as a performance management system. This is the concept behind all training programs as defined by the Bannister Impulse and Response Model.

Lesson 4: Performance Management Chart

Let's bring all these concepts together in this lesson on the Performance Management Chart (PMC) and explain important metrics such as Acute Training Load (ATL) and Chronic Training Load (CTL).

Lesson 5: Case Study/Real World Example

A simple review of a BaseCamp Performance Manager Chart.

These five lessons are also available as a YouTube Playlist here.
