Dave's story: Gents Race

BaseCamp alumnus Dave Douglas shared his experience at the 2023 Gents Race in Slater, Iowa.

That was less of a race and more of an exercise in character building. Friday at about 3:00 p.m. I started having stomach issues. I ate a bagel at 4:00 p.m. That was all the food my stomach would allow. I got off work at 4:30 a.m. I was able to get about an hour and a half of sleep before I had to get up and get ready for the race. When the race started, it was 34 degrees with a 25 mph northwest wind gusting to 40 mph. During the 60-mile ride, I was only able to get in one and a half bottles and 2 GU packets. I honestly believe that if it weren't for BaseCamp, I never would have finished this ride.
