Scott Moninger

Location: Boulder, Colorado
Years guiding: 15
Coach level: USAC certified, Peaks Coaching Group
Background: 17-year pro

Scott Moninger’s amazing amateur and professional career lasted 26 years. Of the approximately 2000+ events he entered, he amassed a total of 275 wins. At the time is his retirement in 2007, and still today, there’s not a US rider who’s even close in terms of career wins. He was the top ranked professional rider in the US twice, first with Coors Light in 1992 and again in 2005 with HealthNet-Maxxis. Scott forged a career as a crafty and seemingly emotionless stage racer, earning him the nickname Iceman. In 2005 was Voted Velonews “North American Male Road Cyclist of the year”. He played a key role in some of the most dominate US based professional team starting in 1991 with Coors light then moving on to the Chevrolet/LA sheriff’s, Navigators, Mercury, HealthNet-Maxxis, and finishing up with the BMC team in 2007.

Scott currently resides in Boulder Colorado, working with Peaks Coaching Group coaching athletes and guiding at camps, he also works as a Speedplay ambassador and also cycling commentator. Scott worked along side Bob Roll as a Tour de France commentator for several years. Moninger still rides when the weather/schedule permits and has been known to enter a random fondo or mid-week training race just to blow out the cob webs. When he’s not traveling the world, Scott also enjoys playing the drums with a local garage band in Boulder, cheering on the three-time world champion Den Broncos, XC skiing, sampling local beer, and enjoying just about any type of outdoor activity the mountains offer.

Brig Brandt

Location: Bend, Oregon
Years Guiding: 7
Coach Level: USAC Certified, Peaks Coaching Group elite/master coach
Background: MTB pro

Brig’s lifelong interest in travel and cycling began in 1989, when his family went on a European vacation to watch the Tour de France. Greg Lemond won in dramatic fashion that year, besting Laurent Fignon in the final time trial. Brig was hooked.

A few years after that Europe trip, Brig entered his first bike race and clawed his way through the ranks of the professional mountain bike world. He couldn’t shake the travel bug, and in 2008 he decided to race less, travel more, and coach cyclists full time. Brig is a USA Cycling level 1 coach with Peaks Coach Group and has had the pleasure of helping a wide range of athletes, from amateurs to elites, reach their cycling goals. He’s enjoyed riding bikes all over the world; his favorite spots are Spain, Italy, and the Pacific Northwest, which is where he calls home.

Len Pettyjohn

Location: Vero Beach, Florida
Years Guiding and Coaching: 45 years
Coach Level: USAC Certified, Master coach with Peaks Coaching Group

Background: Cycling has been my all-consuming lifestyle for over thirty years, with involvement in riding, racing, team management, and event organization. After racing as a graduate student in Wisconsin and then moving to Boulder, Colorado, my cycling interests became more serious. I created and organized local amateur teams that climbed to national-level prominence throughout the 1980s.

By the late 1980s I was managing three major teams: the Coors Light Professional Team, the Crest Amateur Team, and the Lowrey’s Women’s Team. All three achieved world class results, with multiple national champions and five participants on the 1988 Olympic team. The highlight year was 1989, when Coors Light team member Greg LeMond won both the Tour de France and World Road Championship.

Throughout the mid 1990s I continued to work with Coors Light as the team dominated the domestic circuit, with 135 wins in 1992 and more than 500 total wins in six years. In 1995 I began organizing a series of major cycling events, the Mercury Tour, and Saturn Cycling Classic.

In 2005 I was drawn to my current role of working with masters-level riders and racers. I started racing again with the Boulder Masters Team.  Our team utilizes complete power-based training and is one of the most successful masters teams in the U.S., with five current national champions (including myself). Currently I reside in Florida, riding all over the world as well as coaching master's athletes for Peaks Coaching Group.

Paul Smeulders

Location: Ottawa, Canada
Years Guiding: 3
Coach Level: Canada NCCP Road, MTB, and Track
Background: Road, Gravel, Cross

Paul has been riding for more than 35 years, both competitively and recreationally, and he’s the guy you can rely on to find the most scenic and least traveled roads. He’s equally happy with roads paved and unpaved, as long as there’s a ham sandwich somewhere along the way. He’s the developer of ErgVideo, one of the most effective indoor power training tools available. You can call Paul well traveled for having climbed many of bicycle racing’s most famous mountains. Paul’s coaching experience has made him skilled at identifying areas to improve and teaching you how, but this non-pushy Canadian will probably wait until you ask for his advice before he gives it. Otherwise, he’s more likely to distract you from the pain of a climb with old jokes and puns (that he thinks are terribly witty) or by pointing out local wildlife, curiosities, and mind-blowing vistas. Paul thinks you should see spectacular things during your adventure, not just the wheels in front of you. He’s happiest when he hears that you’ve loved the ride.

Check out Paul's ErgVideo website and watch a recorded webinar about training with ErgVideo.

Hi! My name is Kathy Watts and I am your camp director and on the road cycling coach as well.   My job is to make your Velocious training camp experience top notch.  I can help you every step of the way, from start to finish.
